Refrigerator Food Odors and Mold

Refrigerator Repair Presents: Refrigerator Food Odors and Mold

Have you ever opened your refrigerator and smelled a foul odor? Maybe you have tasted some food that didn’t quite taste right. Odors in the refrigerator do not occur by themselves. They can occur from storing foods in unsealed containers. Refrigerator odor can also occur from food spillage and leaving rotten and spoiled in the refrigerator. Sometimes new refrigerators can have a plastic smell, this smell usually goes away within a few days.

Here are some tips to help remove refrigerator odor:

 1. Put a box of baking in the refrigerator and in the freezer. You should replace it every 1-2 months. Depending of the size of your refrigerator. If you have a larger refrigerator like a GE monogram or a subzero you should replace it monthly.

 2. Another suggestion is to place a few teaspoons of vanilla extract in a small dish and sit it in your refrigerator. Do not place vanilla extract in the freezer because it will only freeze and be ineffective.

Sometimes ice cubes can develop a bad taste and smell. Baking soda should help with this problem. Be sue to throw away old food and freezer burnt food from the freezer. When storing food in the refrigerator be sure to check the expiration dates frequently because as the food sits in the refrigerator it starts to lose taste, texture, and nutritional value. Improper stored foods can cause food related illness or even disease. In addition, cleaning your refrigerator often and checking the expiration dates will help to keep mold out the refrigerator. You should clean your refrigerator at least once per month. Anytime, you have spills wipe them up immediately. When cleaning your refrigerator use mild detergents. Never use bleach or ammonia. Regular dish detergent works perfectly for cleaning your refrigerator. Always cover open foods before placing food in the refrigerator.

Following these tips will help keep your refrigerator clean and smelling good. If you ever run into refrigerator problems and need a refrigerator repair; call Northstar Appliance Repair.
